Some of the crafts we may be inspired by include Polynesian cloth-making from tree bark, Scandinavian basketry, Balinese stone carving, Chinese paper making, and more.  Classes will take place outdoors during light rains (drop off and pick up at the 9th street entrance of the park), and will be indoors at Gigi’s home on 8th street between 8th ave and Prospect Park West during heavy rains or thunderstorms. The minimum number of children for this class will be 5.

Weekend Classes

Reconnect With Nature in Prospect Park (Outdoor Class)

Saturdays 9:30am-12:30pm
October 14-November 18 (no class Nov 11), weather permitting  I  $200
Ages 6 and up  I  Prospect Park’s 9th St Entrance

In this Saturday weekend class, our naturalists will spend time in peaceful parts of Prospect Park, undisturbed by busy city life. In each hands-on class, we will learn traditional crafting methods from around the world. Students will interact closely with natural materials such as tree bark, natural fibers and stone to create tools, games, and decorative crafts.

We will be introduced to many edible and medicinal plants on the land and will find out how these plants were used in different cultures, as well as folklore associated with them. Which plant was placed into ancient Roman soldiers’ sandals to relieve foot pain during long walks? Which plant did the Lenape tribe use to stuff pillows and diapers? How is the violet plant connected to Zeus? Which plant was said to keep snakes away if carried in a pocket? What plant was used ceremonially in Asia, Europe, the Americas and Africa to ward off evil spirits? As we say at Spark, when you develop relationships with the plants in your environment, you’ll find friendships everywhere!

Classes will take place during light rains, but will be cancelled if there are heavy rains or thunderstorms.
