Dear Spark families,

We have been thinking of you very much over these past weeks. This time of year, we’re usually getting the wheels turning on different ideas for the summer; testing out art projects and getting excited for what lies ahead. Of course, this year isn’t like other years– like all of you, we’ve been at home, reading, watching, and adjusting to the many changes in the world. We’re writing today with great sadness to let families know that we are making the decision to cancel our June and early July 2020 programs. Our letter lays out our rationale for doing so, provides information about refunds and next steps, and resources for how to share this information with your child.

How we made our decision

We came to this challenging decision as we continued to monitor the status of social distancing policies in New York, guided by the central imperative of keeping children and families safe during our time together, which has always been of paramount importance to us. As of writing this letter, it is difficult to reliably gauge the degree to which Brooklyn will be open and functioning by the time our programs happen, but we asked ourselves if we could ensure the safety of children in the program, understanding that their health and well-being is inseparably linked to their families’. We know that we cannot reliably make this promise to families, and that we could not in good conscience hold our programs if we knew this to be true.

Through all of this, we remain grateful for the Spark community of families who have supported us through the years, and for the wonderful children that make the art, music, and nature come alive. We’re thinking of all of our families at this time, and we look forward to a time when we can come together again.
