We are excited to welcome families back for our 5th year of Spark summer camp! This year, we are thrilled to be running our program out of our new classroom space at the beautiful Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, at 53 Prospect Park West. In addition, we will be spending afternoons exploring Prospect Park. During our 3 weeks together, we will be fully immersed in art activities, nature exploration, creative storytelling, and cultural discovery!
Spark Arts uses creative arts to introduce students to the rich traditions of the world. Since Spark Arts is an arts oriented program, please make sure that your child enjoys art and has sustained attention for ongoing work before signing up for our program.
At Spark, we will also be learning about plants and trees in our park, including how to identify them and how they have been regarded and prepared for use by different cultures.

BOOKMAKING. Week 1: June 27-July 1
This week we will be creating our own bound books consisting of creative ideas. We will learn to create paper from paper pulp and organic materials, learn bookbinding techniques, stain paper, work with lettering and fonts, create interactive pages, and much more!
CLAY. Week 2: July 11-15

Using our imaginations along with handbuilding techniques inspired by different traditions, our class will spend the week working intimately with air dry clay and polymer clay to create pottery, tiles, jewelry, and architectural structures. We will learn about how clay is processed and examine some of the many world myths involving first beings made out of clay.
MOSAICS. Week 3: July 18-22

From Ancient Greece, to Barcelona, to Mexico, to the Middle East, mosaics have brought color, elegance or whimsy to structures and works of art throughout history. This week, we will work with ceramic tile, glass, stone, and a mix of materials to create mosaics both big and small. As we travel the world to learn about mosaics, we will learn about customs, beliefs and myths of different cultures.
